About Words I Can Make

Words I Can Make is a free word-game helper. Type in the letters you have and it tells you every word you can make from them, sorted by length and score. Around that one tool sit an anagram solver, a pattern-based word finder, a finder for daily five-letter puzzles, and several thousand word lists, from "five-letter words starting with S" to the full breakdown of what the letters of RETAIN can spell.

Who runs it

The site is an independent project built in Langley, British Columbia. It is not connected to any game publisher or dictionary company. It exists because the existing helpers were either slow, cluttered with pop-ups, or built on word lists with unclear licensing, and it seemed possible to do better with a small, fast site and a public-domain dictionary.

What it is for

Most visitors are playing a tile game and want the highest-scoring word from a rack, or are stuck on a daily five-letter puzzle and want to see what is still possible. Others are solving a newspaper word scramble, filling a crossword, teaching spelling, or learning English and looking for six-letter words that start with Q. The tools are built to serve all of those jobs from a phone, one-handed, with no account and no waiting.

How it is built

Everything runs in your browser. The word data is downloaded once per session and searched locally, so there is no server to slow things down and nothing you type is sent anywhere. The dictionary is the public-domain ENABLE list; commonness tiers come from the SCOWL project and definitions from Open English WordNet. The how it works page has the full details, the tile-value tables and the attributions.

How it is funded

The site is supported by display advertising. Ads are placed below the tools, never above them, and never inside the results. There are no pop-ups, no forced app installs and no interstitials. The privacy policy explains what the advertising and analytics scripts collect and how to control it.

Fair use of trademarks

The names of popular word games appear in body text only where they help you pick the right settings, for example when choosing a tile-value set. Scrabble, Words With Friends and Wordle are trademarks of their respective owners, and this site is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.

Spotted a missing word, a wrong definition or a bug? The contact page has an email address. Corrections to the word list are checked against the source dictionaries before anything changes, so the answer is sometimes "that word is not in ENABLE", but every message is read.
